Bernard D. Westre, a resident of Little Falls, died Aug. 2, 2007 , at St. Gabriel's Hospital.
Funeral services were held Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Royalton with Rev. Dale Boening officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Royalton. Military rites were conducted by the Little Falls VFW and Royalton American Legion.
Bernard was born Aug. 31, 1925, in Wakonda, S.D. to the late Bert and Gudrun Westre. He grew up near Wakonda, S.D. and attended country school. Bernard entered the US Army on March 14, 1945, and served until his honorable discharge on June 22, 1946. He was united in marriage to Deloris M. Lancrain July 27, 1945, at South Sioux, Neb. The couple farmed in South Dakota with Bernard's father until 1956. The couple moved to Minnesota and purchased a farm in Little Falls Township. While farming, Bernard also worked at Camp Ripley, Larson Boats and helped with the construction of the Little Falls dam. He later owned and operated the Sanitary Landfill near Little Falls until retiring in 1986 to Alamogordo, N.M. In 2000, the couple returned to the Little Falls area. Bernard enjoyed fishing, growing flowers, (especially roses) and traveling. His great joy was spending time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bernard was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Royalton, a member of the Little Falls VFW and Royalton American Legion.
Bernard D. Westre is survived by his beloved wife Deloris; son Raymond Westre and wife Ruth of Little Falls; daughter Marie Majaski and husband Alan of Royalton; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; son Roger Westre and a sister Arlene Karash.
