    • Helen Ruby Westre was born on December 17, 1920 on the family farm near Pukwana to Carl and Nora (Newell) Westre. She grew up on the farm and attended country school with her younger brother Ed, and sister Lillian. Helen graduated from Chamberlain High School and went on to attend the cosmetology program at the South Dakota Beauty Academy in Sioux Falls, SD. Helen was briefly employed as a beautician in Pierre, SD before being called back home to care for her ill mother.

      Helen was united in marriage to Alfred "Buck" Steckelberg in Chamberlain and to this union two children were born, Edward and LeAnn. In 1949 when the children started school, Helen opened "Helen's Beauty Shop" which she continued to operate until her retirement in approximately 2002.

      In addition to her work, Helen enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, and cheering on her children and their friends in all their endeavors. She was a great mentor and role model to the many young people she befriended. Helen also loved to golf and it became her passion. For over 40 years, she enjoyed playing golf with her friends at the Chamberlain Country Club and on trips around the state.

      Helen passed away after a lengthy illness on May 29, 2009 at Sanford Mid Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain at the age of 88 years.

      Preceding her in death were her parents Carl and Nora Westre; husband "Buck"; son Ed "Smokey"; brother Ed Westre; and sister Lillian Schrieber.
